The Joint Initiative releases the most widely-acknowledged accountability measure for U.S. ocean policy. The U.S. Ocean Policy Report Card was developed for 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2012. It assessed policy makers on several different criteria including, national, regional and state ocean governance reform, international leadership, research, science and education, fisheries management reform, funding for ocean programs, and links between oceans and climate change. The U.S. Ocean Policy Report Card received significant press coverage from major media outlets following each release. The 2007 Report Card was featured in The New York Times, Environment & Energy Daily, Environmental News Service, Fox Business, and numerous other sources.
